Question:
I am currently experimenting with the sekonic L-358 flash meter, and using speedlights, any tutorials using camera, speedlights and lightmeter, especially using cables ie PC screwlock to speedlight 580 EX II would be most helpful.I also use a Canon Eos 7D and can connect wirelessly. Thanks
Kind Regards
Peter.
Answer:
The thing that I like about the sekonics is, that in their reading you can balance the amount of available light with the amount of light you want to add with your flash. Awesome. However, I can't really provide you with tips from experience because back in the days when I used a light meter, then I used one from Gossen, which worked differently.
Nowadays I am not using an incident light meter at all. I am shooting fully digital. The feedback that I receive from my camera's build in lightmeter, the histogram and the preview LCD, is so much superior to the feedback that I get from any light meter.
I simply setup my light and make a test shoot of my own hand at the point, where the model will be in the real photo. This tells me everything about the light: Is it technically perfect? Do I have burnt out areas? Anything sinking into black? Is the light artistically what I want it to be? It's all on the screen. A light meter would me allow to guess if my light is what I want. My camera tells me super precisely if the light IS what I want.
Unless it's so much fun for you to use the lightmeter, try out reading your histogram in a test exposure. Once you have a little practise, it will serve you much better.
Regarding the PC cables: I don't use them either. I use radio triggers (Phottix Atlas) in situations in which the optical system does not work.
I wish you good light!
